Your Lafayette Pediatrician Knows More Than Your Health App

Hello Lafayette parents! How many times have you discovered a bumpy rash or discolored skin on your child and then consulted online sites to discover what it may be? Maybe your toddler has loose stools every time he eats wheat and after scouring all the web articles about bowel movements you decide he has a gluten intolerance. Or maybe your Indiana teen has been experiencing headaches so you consult the latest health app on your smart phone.

My name is Nena Pruitt-Merrill and I am a local Power Squares representative based in Lafayette. One of my passions is advocating for children’s health in Lafayette, Indiana.

I am concerned about the number of Lafayette parents diagnosing their children’s health using technology instead of consulting their Indiana pediatrician. I realize it is very convenient to consult online sources when figuring out what may be ailing your child, but you should always check with your physician as well.

Indianapolis, IN parents can’t always be sure that the information gleaned from the web or a health app is reputable. Some online advice might even be dangerous and harm your child. I realize if you are reading my Lafayette children’s health blog you are doing it online. Don’t get me wrong, there is helpful, user-friendly information regarding your Lafayette children’s health, but please let your Indianapolis, IN doctor do the diagnosing and prescribing.

Thanks for stopping by! For more information about children’s health or Power Squares contact me today at 765-427-4963.

Fun Peanut Butter Snacks For Indianapolis, IN Kids

Fun Peanut Butter Snacks For Indianapolis, IN Kids

Healthy, growing children need to snack between meals for proper nutrition. Most Lafayette parents have probably had the experience of forgetting an afternoon snack. What happens? Kids finally notice they’re hungry about an hour before dinner, and boy is it hard to wait!

A great snack ingredient is peanut butter. It is an inexpensive source of protein and calories and gives Lafayette children the nutrients they need to grow and to stay healthy.

Here are some great healthy snack ideas using peanut butter for Oregon and Phoenix, AZ kids.

Peanut Butter Banana Pops

Bananas, cut in half width-wise
Popsicle sticks
Peanut butter
Chopped nuts, sprinkles, or other topping

Take the popsicle sticks and push them carefully into the cut bananas. Spread peanut butter over the bananas and roll in nuts or other topping. Freeze. Enjoy.

Peanut Butter Balls

This is the kind of recipe you can’t really mess up, and the portions are approximate.

about 1 cup of peanut butter
a few tablespoons of honey (2-3)
a few tablespoons of instant dry milk

Mix everything together until it forms a large ball. Pinch off small pieces of dough, and roll into ball shapes. Store in the refrigerator, and pull them out at snack time.

‘Good Job, Bobby! Have Some Saturated Fat!’

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

'Good Job, Bobby! Have Some Saturated Fat!' Do your children’s Indianapolis, IN school teachers reward good behavior with candy or cookies? Don’t you think it’s a little strange to reward Lafayette children with something that is bad for them?

Using unhealthy food as a token of merit undermines Indianapolis, IN nutrition education and encourages over-consumption of foods high in added sugar and fat. It can also set a precedent for emotional eating, prompting Indiana kids to eat when they’re not really hungry.

According to a recent study in The Journal of the American Medical Association, over the past three decades, the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for preschool age children and tripled for children aged 6-11 years. In short, about 20 percent of children are obese. Our children here in Phoenix, AZ, Oregon, and Maryland are no exception.

As a child health advocate based in Lafayette, I encourage all Indiana parents to use non-food alternatives when rewarding good behavior.

I reward my kids with a trip to the Phoenix, AZ library or more outside play time. Food is used to fuel our bodies, not to reward us for doing things we should be doing anyway.

When my kids have had an active day at their favorite Phoenix, AZ park we refuel with nuts and blueberries, which are loaded with antioxidants. Another favorite snack we like to eat to recharge is made from the cacao plant and is also packed with antioxidants.

For more information about this delicious Indianapolis, IN kid-friendly snack and other children’s favorites, please contact me today. Thanks for visiting my Lafayette children’s nutrition blog.

‘How-To’ Market Your Lafayette Home Based Business

Wednesday, June 20th, 2012

'How-To' Market Your Lafayette Home Based Business Some Lafayette online or MLM business owners don’t understand the power of How-To’s in generating content for their Lafayette online business blogs or e-stores.

If you are selling Power Squares (as I am) or selling a financial opportunity like the Power Squares home based business opportunity (as I am also) you have experience describing the benefits of your product and opportunity to potential customers.

If you have been running your Power Squares online business for a while, perhaps you have personalized your demos to make them more compelling for your target market. If potential Indianapolis, IN customers relate to you and your experience, they will be more likely to purchase your product or join your Indiana network marketing team.

If you can explain how you perform a task with your product or service, or how your product solves a problem, you can document this process to create a How-To article or video.

It’s easy:

  1. Perform the steps in the process, and write them down.
  2. Edit them for clarity and add personal details about how this process has benefited you or your customers.
  3. End with a quick summary.

For example, a How-To article describing how to sign up to own your own Power Squares home based business opportunity would include:

  1. Call Nena Pruitt-Merrill at 765-427-4963 or email nena46@comcast.net.
  2. Pay the low start-up fee with check or credit card.
  3. Receive your Power Squares start-up kit.
  4. Register for your Power Squares online store.
  5. Personalize your Power Squares e-store.
  6. Follow the marketing methods I provide.
  7. Process the Power Squares orders you receive.
  8. Receive checks for your sales.

Of course, many of these steps could be described in more detail, but you get the idea.

I challenge all my Power Squares MLM network members to create a How-To article or video this month. I am eager to see you express your creativity in your Power Squares marketing.

Thanks for visiting. Check back often for more information on the Lafayette Power Squares entrepreneur opportunity.

Organic Best For Indianapolis, IN Kids

Organic Best For Indianapolis, IN Kids

Food labels can be confusing for Indianapolis, IN parents wanting to buy the most nutritious food possible for their families. The word ‘natural’ can convey wholesomeness–but that’s not always the case.

Look for more specific food labels like ‘organic’ which means, in fruits and vegetables, that the food is grown without pesticides. Some evidence suggests that organic fruits and vegetables contain higher amounts of vitamin C and other nutrients than non-organic.

The organic label on poultry, meat, and dairy means that no antibiotics, hormones, or pesticides are given to the animals, and the livestock are given only organic feed. ‘Organic’ livestock also must have access to the outdoors, and disease is prevented through natural methods.

‘Natural’ isn’t a term regulated by the FDA, so products with this label may still contain additives. Instead, look for the USDA organic badge, a guarantee that there is no high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oil, genetically modified ingredients, or artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners.

Indianapolis, IN children and infants are the most vulnerable to hormone and pesticide exposure due to their less-developed immune systems and their still-developing brains and bodies. Indianapolis, IN parents who provide organic food support their child’s health now and in the future.

Should Lafayette Online Sellers Respond To Negative Reviews?

Thursday, June 7th, 2012

Should Lafayette Online Sellers Respond To Negative Reviews? As a mentor for new Lafayette online business owners, I am mindful of how search engine dynamics affect home based business owners with online stores.

There are two schools of thought about negative reviews: To respond or not to respond.

In an article in the Direct Selling News, author Don Sorenson very effectively explains why responding to negative reviews may increase the harm to your online reputation. I believe the points that Mr. Sorenson makes regarding negative reviews are important for every Lafayette online seller.

I quote from Mr. Sorenson’s article:

‘When you see a negative review about your company the instinctive reaction is to post a response to set the record straight. I understand the human need to respond, but you have to consider Google’s point of view. Here’s why: Search engines rank various websites high for a few reasons, one of which is relevant content, especially when that content is updated on a regular basis.’

‘When you post a comment on a website, you are in effect giving it new content. And if you get into a back-and-forth discussion with someone on a review website about your company, Google thinks ‘Ah, there’s a lot about this company here, so we’ll rank this website high for searches on their company name.’

‘Now when someone does a search on your company, they are even more likely to see the negative review. You want to avoid that. In fact, you want the websites with negative comments to slip further down the Google rankings so they don’t appear on the first page or two of a search.’ Don Sorenson, “Protecting Your Company’s Online Reputation,” Direct Selling News, March 2011, http://www.directsellingnews.com/index.php/site/entries_archive_display/protecting_your_companys_online_reputation April 2, 2011

Of course, Lafayette home business owners should respond to complaints by actual customers with legitimate problems. However, consider carefully whether your customer service efforts should take place in an online public forum.

Other social media experts believe it helps a company in the long run to respond to negative reviews. Here is a link to an article that supports this view: http://mackcollier.com/study-responding-to-negative/

I hope this helps Lafayette online business owners understand the ramifications of responding to negative online reviews. For more information about owning your own home based business in Lafayette, contact me today. I have helped hundreds of Lafayette entrepreneurs live their dream of business ownership.

Helping Indianapolis, IN Kids Cope With Seasonal Allergies

Helping Indianapolis, IN Kids Cope With Seasonal Allergies

Hello Indianapolis, IN! Welcome to today’s children’s health and nutrition blog. Today, we are discussing seasonal allergies. Many Indianapolis, IN parents wonder if their child’s sneezing and runny nose are temporary symptoms of a cold or seasonal allergies. Generally, colds also come with aches and a low fever and last only a week, while allergies can persist for an entire season. Indianapolis, IN doctors are seeing new cases of seasonal allergies among people of all ages, especially adults. Is this an unintended result of more aggressive germ-fighting in childhood?

‘Researchers speculate that thanks to antibacterial soaps, hand sanitizers and other powerful germ-killing products, kids today are less likely to be exposed to the bacteria and viruses that help the immune system shift into gear and prevent them from developing allergies and asthma as they grow up.’1

Regardless of the possibility that allergies may persist into adulthood, there are several steps Indianapolis, IN parents can take to help their child get through the allergy prone months with minimal discomfort:

Replace your filters (AC and furnace) at least every two or three months, and look for MERV ratings of 11 or 12 for maximum efficiency filters. Though it may be difficult during the hot Indianapolis, IN months, remember to keep your windows closed at home and in the car. Check pollen levels online and try to have your child wait until evening to go outdoors when pollen counts are lower.

Have your child shower before going to bed to wash allergen out of his or her hair and skin so it won’t transfer to bedding and increase irritation during the night. You can also use plastic or allergen-proof covers for your child’s mattress, box springs, and pillows for extra protection.

Your Indianapolis, IN doctor can test your child to determine the specific allergens and prescribe safe and effective medications.

Healthy Skin for Lafayette Kids

Healthy Skin for Lafayette Kids

Hi! Welcome to my Lafayette children’s health blog. Today’s topic is ‘Healthy Skin for Lafayette Children.’

The skin is the body’s largest organ, and it’s easy to take for granted all that our skin does for us. It is our first defense against germs, it regulates body temperature, it gives us the sense of touch, and so much more. This organ is always hard at work and parents in the Indianapolis, IN area need to be sure it’s working well for their children.

A common skin problem in our Indiana climate is simple irritation. Irritated skin is more likely to crack, which can increase the risk for infection. If your child’s skin is irritated, look around at some of the products in your home that may be causing it. Soaps, detergents, dryer sheets, and other household cleaners all have chemicals and fragrances that can be irritating. Lafayette parents can try switching brands or reducing use of these products.

Basic skin care for children should include moisturizing after bathing, using fragrance-free products, and practicing good sun protection. If dry skin is an issue for your child, pick up a humidifier at any Maryland, Oregon, or Phoenix, AZ drugstore and allow it to run in your child’s room while they sleep.

If simple skin irritation can’t be controlled, or if your child develops other skin issues, make sure to take them to your Lafayette pediatrician.
